A cortex is the outermost layer of a stem or root in a plant, or the surface layer or. skin of the non-fruiting part of the body of some lichens. The function of root hairs is to collect water and mineral nutrients present in the soil and take this solution up through the roots to the rest of the plant . Blade: flat expanded portion of the leaf. Petiole: branch that connects leaves to stems. Sepals: green bracks found at the base of the flower. Stamen: male part of the flower - pollen. Pistil: female part of the flower - ovary + eggs. Complete - has all 4 main components. Perfect - has both stamen and pistil. Imperfect - has only male or female parts.
