SOC 256 Chapter Notes - Chapter pg. 36-39: Justice Of The Peace, Toda People
Document Summary
For ages, people have referred to families as two married parents and children and very few people were willing to accept the fact that there can be more than one definition of the word family. The meaning of the word family changes so often and in so many ways. In the 18th century, the nobility believed it was married parents and their children. In different areas of the world, the idea of family is different from what some people would think is normal. Children who were born out of wedlock were considered children of no one. no one had to claim the child was theirs if the parents were not married. But in some north american tribes, they do not believe that children can belong to no one, instead they belong to everyone. All the children are considered a shared responsibility. In some chinese cultures, children are raised by siblings instead of the parents.
