Chain of command: chief of police, deputy chief, assistant chief, captain, lieutenant, sergeant, patrol officers and detectives. Pds organized according to the following: the size of its jurisdiction, the types of crimes it must deal with, and the demographics of the population it must police. In metropolitan areas police responsibilities are divided into beats or precincts. A precinct is also known as a beat or a station. Departments split 24 hour days into three 8-hour shifts called tours or platoons: 12am-8am, 8am-4pm, 4pm-12am. The main goal of any police department is the most efficient organization of its field services (a. k. a. line services or operations) which include things such as patrol activities, investigations, and special operations.
