Appreciating music is often removed from ordinary life, often considered a luxury. The author disagrees that music is an escape from real life. Freud did not enjoy music; theorized the organism is constantly seeking to rid itself of disturbing stimuli, sexual fulfillment is prime source of satisfaction for men and women. Neurotics-failed to reach sexual maturity, turn away from reality because they find it unbearable. Phantasy derived from play (should be outgrown. Freud believes all forms of art and literature are derived from unsatisfied sexuality, redirect sexual energy into their creations. If total sexual fulfillment were possible arts would become obsolete (author disagrees) Infantile development theories-people do not outgrow infantile past and revert to immature behaviors and emotions when under stress regression=state of narcissism. Music takes people back to primal maternal period. Argument against this theory is that prosodic element of speech is not necessarily infantile. Inexpressive speech is a sign of brain/development damage.
