As a korean woman attending a university where over seventy percent of the student population is caucasian, i have encountered several situations where i suddenly became aware of my race and/or gender. A few weeks ago, my male friend offered to help me work out at the gym and i gratefully accepted. As we headed for the weights, he handed me a ten-pound weight and proceeded to tell me that this was good for me. I laughed and told him that i can definitely do more and reached for a thirty-pound weight. He shook his head and said, c"mon christine. Ninety percent of girls can"t squat with more than twenty-five pounds anyways, not just you. I looked at him with a baffled face and he continued, telling me that girls who can exercise with more are too buff anyways . After hearing that, i was incredibly offended, but ending up not saying anything.
