POS 4624 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: War Relocation Authority, Executive Order 9066, Axis Powers

27 views1 pages
In 1919, the Prohibition began with the 18th Amendment, which provided a great economic
opportunity for organized crime like the mafia. Mafias became the first to organize speakeasies
and produce Moonshine, and it was all un-taxed. This illegal activity became popular and freely
talked about, but the police still tried to crack down on the crime. Once the public realized the
alcohol consumption was still being done, just in illegal communities instead of legitimate
businesses, prohibition lost its support and was finally overturned in 1933.

When America went to war with Italy, and the Axis Powers, in WWII, the Alien Registration
Act of 1940 required all non-citizen adults to register with the government within 4 months of
arriving to America. It really caused a lot of anxiety for those that had to register. After Pearl
Harbor, that Italians who weren’t citizens had to carry “enemy alien” photo IDs and needed
permits to travel more than 5 miles from home. President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066
applied to Italians as well as Japanese, and 10,000 of us were taken from our homes and sent to
internment camps, with major ones in Maryland, Oklahoma, and Texas.
