Chapter 1 introducing government in america: politics and government matter!! Roughly half of americans under 30 don"t pay attention to politics. 1970"s almost no generation gap in political interest: lack of interest= lack of information. 2012 youth less knowledgable than elderly: youth correct only 37% while elderly 57% There has never been, nor ever will be, a people who are politically ignorant and free. Identifying policies that benefit: active participation in politics, those who participate in politics benefit. Voter turnout for elderly increases, hence they benefit: more at stake for them- medicare, social security. Youth today hasn"t had policy that affects them; elderly had draft, Nixon and carter televised addresses had half of american watching it: now other program dominate tv, youth have no political habits. Opportunities in social media to get youth involved: pos: express opinions, cons: choose what they see/hear, youth today more active in their community but less involved in national politics.
