HUN 2201 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Digestion, Metabolic Waste, Integumentary System
Document Summary
Food becomes us: atoms form molecules, cells form tissues and organs, organs cooperate as organ systems. Endocrine system secretes hormones that help regulate food intake and the function of the digestive organs. Nervous system sends nerve signals that help control the passage of food through the digestive tract. Once absorbed, nutrients are transported to individual cells by the cardiovascular system. Urinary, respiratory, integumentary (skin, hair, nails) systems allow. The digestive system for elimination of metabolic waste: functions: digestion and absorption. Water, vitamins, and minerals can be absorbed without being broken into smaller units carbs, proteins, and fats must be broken down further. Fiber cannot be digested and is not absorbed from the digestive tract into the body eliminated as feces: organs of the digestive system. Gastrointestinal tract- mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestines, anus. Connective tissue- layer of nerves and blood vessels surrounding the mucosa: provides support, delivers nutrients to the mucosa, provides nerve signals that control secretion and muscle contraction.
