Chapter 8: schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Psychosis: the inability to decipher what is real and what is unreal. Schizophrenia: one of the most severe and puzzling psychotic disorders; alternates between the following phases: Clear thinking and communication with an accurate view of reality, and proper functioning of daily life. Active phase of illness: thinking and speech are disorganized, people lose touch with reality, and have difficulty caring for themselves. Tends to develop in the late teenage or early adult years. Within the us 1-2% of the population will develop schizophrenia. 1% of population develop schizophrenia (strong biological component; relatively rare) Prodromal phase: symptoms building up but still normal. Schizophrenia spectrum: reflects the fact that there are 5 domains of symptoms that define psychotic disorders, and their number, severity, and duration distinguish psychotic disorders from each other. Positive symptoms: include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thought and speech, and disorganized or catatonic behavior; anything that adds something to the individual"s personality.
