SGST200 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Gay Bar, Lobotomy, Stonewall Uprising
Document Summary
Stonewall was a gay bar in greenwich village, ny. It was invaded and raided by the police in june of 1969, and for the first time, a large number of queer individuals fought back as opposed to just letting the police arrest them. When they fought back, they actually had the upper hand in the fight, and proved that the queer community was a force to be reckoned with. Stonewall became representative of the change of times from horrible mistreatment to fighting for and starting to gain some of the rights of the queer community. It really boosted the start of the movement for gay rights, gaining support not only from closeted homosexuals, but also from heterosexual members of the community. Common ideas about homosexuals and homosexuality during stonewall (specifically pre-stonewall) were that homosexuality was a mental defect, maybe even to the point of psychopathy.
