MAST382 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Fouling, Sound, Seafloor Spreading
Document Summary
Compared to atmosphere water is better at absorbing electromagnetic radiation (radio, radar, ultraviolet, infrared, and visible light) However satellite sensors can help map seafloor loosely by making very precise measurements of sea surface height. Only in 1920s oceanographers discovered that sound waves could be used as their eyes to see the seafloor. Also discovered that magnetic and gravity fields of the seafloor could be sensed through the depths of the ocean water. Satellites can map surface features such as wave patterns, temperatures, and abundance of plant life in near surface waters. Avg depth is 3800m, greatest depth is 11040 m. To take sample of deep ocean waters or sediment, oceanographers must lower instruments or samplers usually on a wire then haul them back up to ship; bc of how deep the ocean is this is very time consuming. Meaning few samples can be taken every trip out to sea and are expensive to obtain.
