76 views22 pages

Document Summary

Brain stem: midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata. Surrounded by gray matter: neuron cell bodies. Gray matter surrounded by white matter: myelinated fiber tracts. Continuous with one another & with central canal of spinal cord. Hollow ventricular chamber filled with csf & lined by ependymal cells. Anteriorly, lie close together separated by septum pellucidum thin median membrane. Each lateral ventricle communicates with 3rd ventricle in diencephalon via interventricular foramen brain-channel. 3rd ventricle continuous with 4th ventricle via cerebral aqueduct canal-like channel: runs through midbrain. 3 openings on its walls connect ventricles to fluid-filled subarachnoid space that surrounds brain: paired lateral apertures: side walls, median aperture: roof. Gyri elevated ridges of brain: precentral gyrus anteriorly borders central sulcus while postcentral gyrus posteriorly borders central sulcus. Insula lobe: central sulcus separates frontal lobe from parietal love, parieto-occipital sulcus separates occipital lobe from parietal lobe, lateral sulcus separates temporal lobe from parietal & frontal lobes.
