Essay questions: in class, i argued that the english colonization of the chesapeake provides a good example of how not to start a colony. Why, or why not: jamestown began in 1604 when a group of british settlers stepped foot on the east coast looking for gold to take back to the king of england. The colonists had been funded by the virginia company. The company gave them shares in the company in exchange for starting a colony. The placement of the colony was defensive, but swampy and prone to flooding. The seawater wasn"t drinkable, and the standing water brought mosquitoes. Many of the settlers became ill and died. Its religious aspects were supplemented by political rulers who wanted to extend their power and control at the expense of the church. Martin luther, posted a series of theses at the church challenging the catholic church, for example believing in god was the only way to get in, not indulgences.
