Life expectancy @ birth- # years a person can expect to live from birth. Low-average life expectancy may be due to high child mortality rate followed by a reasonable life span among those who manage to survive childhood. Child mortality rate- # children who die before age 5 per 1,000 live births. Life expectancy increasing in most of the world, except: africa- hiv/aids epidemic, ussr and post-soviety countries, distribution of poverty matches low life expectancy. Significantly higher child mortality in west and central africa compared to industrialized countries. Globally infectious diseases = 2nd commonest cause of death after cardiovascular disease, and in low-income countries it is the leading cause (hiv/aid) 18% cancers are caused by infections: water and sanitation. Proportion of population using an improved drinking water source- protected from outside contamination (i. e. , fecal matter) Proportion of population using improved sanitation facility- hygienically separates human excreta from human contact.
