Ells cannot be academically successful if they don"t understand what the teacher is saying (what they are expected to do, or how to do something) - even if they are motivated. Appropriate speech, clear explanations of academic tasks, and using a variety of techniques. Speak slowly, in a meaningful way - chunk into meaningful phrases, enunciate, and use repetition. Slow down, enunciate, use pauses (for lower levels) Complexity of language (what the teacher says) Ask students for elaboration - give details, say it another way, explain. Model what you want children to say. Reduce use of synonyms (unless they"ve been taught) Point out cognates - native language has latin or greek base. Simplify sentence structures - use subject-verb-object and reduce embedded clauses and passive voice. Give clear instructions - step-by-step using modeling or demonstrations. Oral directions should be used with written directions so ells can refer back to them. Show visuals with each step if needed.
