Arrangement of desks can send a message indirectly to the students about how they are supposed to behave. Can also impact them directly (straight row - can the hear student talking at other end?) Awareness of the physical environment and its impact and the ability to use that environment to meet your goals. Plan spatial arrangements that support instructional plans/goals. Protection from bad weather, noise, extreme temperatures, noxious odors, etc. Physical security when working with dangerous supplies and equipment. Be sensitive to need for space (wheelchairs, crutches, etc. ) Psychological security - the feeling that it is a safe and comfortable place to be. Include soft elements to your classroom environment - stuffed animals, plants, beanbag chairs, fish tanks, warm colors, etc. Interaction among students - different seating arrangements facilitate different amounts of contact. Rearrange room when a lesson requires a different layout. The way students are arranged can also affect interaction between the teacher and the students.
