Ch 9: tv - reflecting and affecting society. Lines of resolution: rows of pixels that make up a tv picture image: pixels: lighted dots that make up the image. Wwii froze the development of tv from 1940-1945 b/c electronic technology was needed for the war effort. Consumer demand postwar pushed companies to start developing tv again. Channel allocation: placement of assigned spots on the electromagnetic spectrum to individual broadcast stations: huge demand for stations and had to make sure every community had at least 1 channel. At first, there were 4 television networks - abc, nbc, cbs, dumont (existed from 1946-1955) Affiliates: local stations that have a contractual relationship with the network but are not owned by the network: dumont lacked these so couldn"t afford a full slate of competitive programming. Kinescopes: poor-quality films taken directly from tv monitors in the network studios (forerunners of videotapes)
