BISC104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Chloroplast, Cell Membrane, Endoplasmic Reticulum
Document Summary
Explain why we eat-food is a source of energy, and we need them for nutrients to build cell to grow, repair, functioning. Macronutrient- nutrients which are required in large amounts-water, carbohydrates, proteins, fat. Micronutrient- nutrients which are needed in small quantities. Necessary for survival, help the body disperse other nutrients, help dissolve and eliminate the waste products of digestion. Examples- simple carbohydrates (mono &disaccharides) :glucose, fructose, sucrose, laoctose. / food source (used as sweetness/flavor): grape, juice, honey, milk. Distinguish between simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber. Simple: monosaccharides/ complex: polysaccharides /dietary fiber: composed of mainly complex carbohydrate that human cannot digested. Any of the amino acids that humans cannot synthesize and thus must be obtained from the diet. Dietary protein that contains all the essential amino acids. Saturated-carbon are saturated with hydrogen, usually animal sources. Found in butter and other fat that are solid at room temperature. Polyunsaturated fats- relating to fats constraining many carbon-carbon double bond unsaturated by hydrogen atoms.
