Kin groups and kin relationships are multifunctional, meaning that the same groups organize many aspects of people"s live. Particular persons develop closer ties with one or another side of their family according to circumstance and personal preferences. No systemic culture pattern of feeling closer to or socializing with relatives according to whether they are paternal or maternal kin. A people believe they should have with various kind of relatives are part of the norms of kinship. Kinship norms are surprisingly variable from people to people.
