Iron production increased with new technology: rice, lots of rivers and streams for shipping. China during the song and yuan dynasties, 960-1368. 10th century tang china broke up into separate states: song, liao, jin. Taizu founder: general whose troops made him emperor. Armies under control of the central government. Curbed power of generals: retired, rotated, had people spy on them. Peace treaty with the north to keep them from invading, had to pay them large sums yearly. Jurchens invaded and kidnapped the emperor 1126.
