BILD 3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 22: Eastern Spotted Skunk, Western Spotted Skunk, Courtship Display
Document Summary
Dawkin"s reading: since speciation can often occur gradually, the line between when a species truly becomes a new species can be fuzzy. It shows the gene flow of closely related species and how, at times, two species may not be entirely separate. It can also allude to the gradual nature of evolution, as it illustrates the intermediate combinations and steps between the starkly different phenotypes of two species. Biological species concept: group of populations with the ability to interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring but unable to the same with other such groups. This applies to humans, as all individuals have the potential to mate with any other human and create viable, fertile offspring. This idea cannot not be applied to all species, however; which can be seen in polar bears and grizzly bears. They can reproduce, but other biological processes keep them apart. Morphological species concept: distinguishes a species by body shape and other features.
