Document Summary

3. 1 what kinds of molecules characterize living things. Except lipids they are all polymers which are made up of monomers. Proteins: formed from different combos of 20 amino acids. Carbohydrates: link sugar monomers to form polysaccharides. Nucleic acid = 4 kind of nucleotide monomers. Lipids can also form large structure from smaller molecules but noncovalent forces maintain the interaction between lipid monomers. Macromolecules = polymers with molecular weights exceeding 1000. Functional groups give specific properties to biological molecules. Each has specific chemical properties that when attached to larger molecules transfer those properties. Can help determine shape of macromolecule and interactions. Isomers have different arrangements of the same atom. Isomers = same chemical formula with different arrangement. Structural isomers: differ in how atoms are joined together. Different ways atoms are linked = different molecules. Cis-trans isomers: involve a double bond between two carbon atoms where the carbons share two pairs of electrons.
