Religious assertiveness and authoritarian reform: the era of abdul hamid ii. Abdul hamid was an authoritarian that repressed european models and stressed islam. Hamid downplayed ottomanism and the tanzimat by catering to the ulama and religion. He did this to secure the loyalty of arab inhabitants, which they liked. Hamid"s first decade accelerated the tanzimat, especially in education. The bureaucracy wanted to buffer education to counteract european christian missionaries and influence. Used western system of teaching, but stressed islamic lessons. Rapid development of rail and telegraph systems under hamid tightened the central govt"s grip over the hinterlands. Germany and the ottomans got close and germans built a railway from berlin-baghdad. Hamid feared his predecessor"s disposition and he tried to control the state.
