Document Summary

Descriptive statistics: use numerical and graphical summaries to characterize a dataset or describe a relationship between 2 variables. Descriptive summaries such as mean and the standard deviation,a s well as graphical techniques, can be used whether the data are from a sample or from an entire population. Inferential statistics: we use sample days to make conclusions about a broader range of individuals than just those who are observed. Inferential methods can be used only when the data in hand are from a representative sample for the question being asked about a larger population. Population: the entire group of units about which inferences will be made. Sample: the group of units that are actually measured or surveyed. Census: when every unit in the population is measured or surveyed. The principle way to guarantee that the sample datas represents a larger population is to use simple random sample.
