Metabolism is the sum of the chemical reactions in an organism. Anabolism is the energy-using process: the synthesis of complex organic molecules from simpler ones, requires energy from fueling reactions, very energy-intensive. Microbial metabolism: catabolism provides the building blocks and energy for anabolism. A metabolic pathway is a sequence of enzymatically catalyzed chemical reactions in a cell: metabolic pathways are determined by enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that have catalytic (active) sites that are very particular for a particular substrate. Able to regulate pathways by shutting down just one enzyme: how is atp an intermediate between catabolism and anabolism. Produces a product that the cell needs and makes it go faster. The collision theory states that chemical reactions can occur when atoms ions, and molecules collide. Activation energy is needed to disrupt electronic configurations.
