The goal of child rearing is to save children from sin. Education, retirement: normative history-graded influences- influences common to people of a particular generation because of historical circumstances. Long- term changes in the genetic and cultural makeup of a population: nonnormative life events- unusual occurrences that have a major impact on the individual"s life. Interaction of people over many years: cross-cultural studies- compare aspects of two or more cultures. Are bidirectional: periods of development, developmental period- time frame in a person"s life that is characterized by certain features, prenatal period- time from conception to birth. Involves tremendous growth, from single cell to an organism complete with brain and behavioral capabilities. Psychological activities are just beginning (language, symbolic thought, sensorimotor coordination, and social learning: early childhood- from infancy to 5/6yrs. Yong children learn to become more self-sufficient and to care for themselves, develop school readiness skills and spend many hours in play with peers: middle and late childhood- 6-11yrs.
