Document Summary

Obesity-prevention programs in schools can trigger disordered eating in some children. It is important to promote healthy eating behaviors in children and positive body image. Avoid discussing weight with your children as they may become focused on a number of how much they should weigh. It is important not to encourage children to weigh themselves either as this can turn into an obsessive behavior. Rather than counting calories or practicing dieting with children, focus on healthy behaviors as a whole. Encourage children to eat a variety of foods from all five food groups and teach them not to restrict food. Always allow some sweet treats into their diet as long as it"s in moderation! Encourage your child to be physically active in a way they enjoy such as joining a team sport or riding bikes with friends. Children are starting to face weight stigma from their peers at younger ages.
