Document Summary

Avery welch organic chemistry chapter 9: stereogenic centers & stereochem weeks 8-9: this system compares the higher priority group on each carbon of the c=c unit, independently from the other. Each carbon atom of the c=c unit is examined independently by asking which of the 2 attached atoms or groups is higher in priority, using an atom-by-atom comparison. To determine the e/z name, the methyl on one carbon (in green) is higher in priority than the hydrogen atom on that carbon. On the other carbon of the c=c unit, the chloromethyl (in red) is higher in priority than the ethyl (cclhh > ccch) 34 is e-4-chloro-3-ethyl-2-butene: it is important to emphasize that although z and cis are both derived from groups being on the same side of a double bond, they arise from completely different definitions. Never assume that z is cis or e is trans.
