Document Summary

Carboxylic & sulfonic acids: there are 2 classes of relatively strong o-h organic acids with pka values generally in the range of 1-5, depending on the nature of the r group. Carboxylic acids (figure 4) have a carbonyl group (c=o) attached to the o-h unit. The polarized c=o unit leads to a larger negative charge in oxygen of the oh unit. This inductive effect (through bond and through space inductive effects) makes the attached h more positive, and the acid more acidic. Sulfonic acids (figure 5) have a o2s (sulfonyl) group attached to the o-h unit. In general, sulfonic acids are more acidic than carboxylic acids. Formic acid: formic acid (hcooh, figure 6) is a specific example of a carboxylic acid. To form the conjugate acid ammonia (nh3) and the conjugate base pka of 3. 75. Resonance stability of the conjugate base is used to explain this fact.
