Document Summary

E. g. humans and chimps similar than monkeys; but all 3 are more similar to ea other than to a catfish; etc. Darwin saw this as descent with modification or evolution. Evol produces 2 distinct, but related patterns. Nested similarities found among species on present-day earth. Both help to describe evol hx that lead to biological diversity. Phylogeny- the hx of descent w/ branching. Evol s inferred from patterns of relatedness among current species make predictions of the past and proven w/ fossils. Node- on a phylogenetic tree, it represents the most recent common ancestor of 2 descendant species. Phylogenetic tree- a hypothesis about the evolutionary hx, or phylogeny, of the species (hyp b/c represent the best model/explanation) Does not imply that more recently evolved groups are more advanced than those that arose earlier. Systematics- the study of evolutionary relationships among organisms. Breaks them up into groups of related organisms. Provides hierarchical classification of species in groups that become more inclusive.
