Gender roles and gender stratification: economic roles affect gender stratification. Decreased when men and women made roughly equal contributions to subsistence. Greatest when women contributed either much more or much less than the men did. In foraging communities, gender stratification the largest when me contributed much more to the diet than women did. Domestic-public dichotomy- contrast between women"s role in the home and men"s role in public: reduced gender stratification-matrilineal matrilocal societies. Women have higher status in matrilineal-matrilocal societies. Descent group membership, succession to political positions, allocation of land, and overall social identity: matriarchy.
