This essay is concerned with 2 specific issues that have as their backdrop the heroic central figure, the trial lawyer. It considers the role of screen lawyers in seeking to maintain public support for the due process of the law. Considers when screen lawyers are permitted to go outside the formal process of law to ensure that the right result is achieved. A key, as yet largely unresolved dimension, to the study of cinematic portrayals of law and lawyers has been the causal link between what the public sees and the effect of such representation. One of the apparent contradictions is between a historically generally positive screen image of lawyers and a general lay dislike for the activities of the profession, most crudely indicated by the range of anti lawyer jokes. Lawyer bashing according to the aba has become the current fad. Americans have always had ambivalent feelings about lawyers.
