NET 4000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1.4.3: Tcsh, Stephen R. Bourne, Kornshell
Document Summary
The linux shell is the command line interface (cli) or text user interface (tui) that administrators use to control a linux operating system. Users and programs use the shell to send commands to the system. A linux shell, or terminal session, can be opened from an applications menu inside a graphical user interface (gui) session, or the linux shell might be the sole method used to run the computer. You can also use the ctrl+alt+f1 key combination to start or switch to the first linux shell session. Although most linux distributions now include a graphical interface, and many administration tasks can be completed within the graphical environment, a linux system administrator needs to be able to manage the system from the command prompt. Linux is widely implemented on server systems where the graphical environment is disabled. In addition, graphical environments and tools may vary between distributions, but shell commands are more likely to be consistent.
