Isis developed out of people who broke with al-qaeda in iraq and syria. There were a number of groups involved in the developments that western media decided to call the "arab spring," though the muslim brotherhood, another terrorist organization, was one of the most prominent. Isis was created by us policy objectives to overthrow the syrian government (emphasis added): All kinds of other elements were included, too: iran"s attempts to gain shi"a dominance over the. Middle east, the power struggle between turkey and saudi arabia, and the activity of a number of terrorist organizations which all demand a restoration of a single worldwide caliph for islam. This last group has not been large enough in any country to bring about that kind of change, however. The most hopeful spot right now is egypt, where the head of the government has repeatedly called for reform in islam, and the embracing of peace and pluralist freedoms of expression.
