Some basic ideas about marriage and some historical context. The two common meanings for marriage (what have often been referred to as the basic. "goods" of marriage) have been, pretty much across the board, unitive and procreative. Marriage is most often understood as a covenant or family bond, rather than as a contract. A contractual understanding of marriage does show up in some cultures, and has become very common in the industrialized west in the last fifty years especially. Historically, looking at the big picture, though, this is an anomaly. To process this, we should keep in mind that a covenant and contract are very different, at least as those terms are technically used outside us civil contractual law. It is an exchange of persons, created by the swearing of oaths/vows, and the classic covenant formula is "i am yours and you are mine. "
