Document Summary

Whites with criminal records are as likely to be hired as blacks without criminal records. Whites are more likely to be channeled upwards, while minority peoples are more likely to be channeled downwards. Indeed, black job seekers fare no better than white men just released from prison. Discrimination continues to represent a major barrier to economic self-sufficiency for those at the low end of the labor market hierarchy. Latinos, are routinely passed over in favor of whites for the most basic kinds of low-wage work. Indeed, discrimination has not been eliminated in the post-civil rights period as some contend, but remains a vital component of a complex pattern of racial inequality. Socialization refers to those social processes through which an individual becomes integrated into a social group by learning the group"s culture and his or her roles in that group. Gender signs and signals are so ubiquitous that we usually fail to note them unless they are missing or ambiguous.
