Prominent role in suicides, homicides, motor vehicle accidents: tobacco use. Increasing rate of deaths, esp. in developing countries (50% smokers) 2020 estimated 8-9 million deaths worldwide (more than any disease: dsm- v, maladaptive pattern of behaviors that are related to continued use of drugs, creates significant set of problems for person. Inability to control use of the drug. Tolerance the need for increased amounts of the drug to achieve intoxication. Withdrawal unpleasant physical and psychological effects that the person experiences when he or she tries to stop taking the drug: old terms. Substance dependence disorders at least moderate in severity. Addiction: psychoactive substances chemicals that alter a person"s mood, level of perception, or brain functioning a, legal, illegally, prescription, over-the-counter.
