Document Summary

Puberty + hormonal changes increased sexual interest. Cultural expectations determine when and how dating begins. Early adolescents tend to date for recreation and achieving peer status. Late adolescents are ready for greater intimacy and seek partners that are personally compatibility, provide companionship, affection and social support. Positive relationships with parents and friends contribute to development of warm romantic ties. Early attachment bond leads to internal working model (set of expectations about attachment figures) that guides later close relationships. Frequent dating is related to drug use, delinquency, and poor academic achievement. Combined with history of uninvolved parenting and aggression in relationships increases likelihood of dating violence and subsequently mental health consequences. Gay and lesbian youths have first relationships that are short lived and have little emotional commitment due to fear of peer harassment and rejection. At the appropriate age, dating can provide lessons in cooperation, etiquette, and dealing with people in a wide range of situations.
