Pattern of 3 facial abnormalities: short eyelid openings, thin upper lip, smooth or flattened philtrum (or indentation running from bottom of nose to the center of the upper lip) Brain injury - small head and impairment in at least three areas of functioning. Brain injury evident in at least 3 areas of impaired functioning. Defects vary with timing and length of alc exposure. Paternal alcohol use around time of conception can induce genetic alterations and contribute to symptoms. At least 3 areas of mental functioning are impaired. Typical physical growth and absence of facial abnormalities. Even when provided enriched diets, fas babies fail to catch up in physical size. More alcohol poorer child"s motor coordination, speed of info processing, attention, memory, reasoning and intelligence and achievement test scores during preschool and school years.
