All antipsychotics work by blocking dopamine receptors. Also act on other nts such as serotonin, norepinephrine and acetylcholine. Second generation antipsychotics produce a broader range of neurochemical actions in the brain than traditional drugs which act primarily on dopamine receptors. E. g. clozapine and olanzapine - strong block of serotonin receptors, weaker block of da receptors. Attempt to improve coping skills of family members, recognizing burden of caring for a family member with a chronic mental disorder. Patients maintained on antipsychotics on outpatient basis. Educational component to help family members understand accept the nature of the disorder. Eliminate unrealistic expectations for the patient which may lead to harsh criticism. Behavioral family management - improve communication and problem solving skills to enhance family"s ability to work together and minimize conflict. Reduce relapse rates but do not necessarily prevent relapse in the long run.
