PSYCH 127A Chapter Notes - Chapter 7.1: Startle Response, Dazed, Derealization
Document Summary
Asd does not last longer than a month. Ptsd continues or sometimes begins at least a month after the trauma. Some experience repeated, distress memories of the incident, others relive them in dreams. Flashbacks - sudden memories replaying the trauma. May occur as a dissociative state where the person feels and acts if the trauma were recurring. Usually short but may last for days. Avoid thoughts/feelings related to event, people, places, activities. May refuse to discuss the events or feelings resulting from trauma. Long term healing involves facing feelings, memories and perhaps some of the circumstances surrounding trauma. E. g. exaggerated startle response - excessive fear in reaction to the unexpected. Asd and ptsd moved to a new category (not anxiety disorders) because heightened reactivity can take other forms. Inability to experience positive emotions, persistent fear, anger or guilt, feelings of detachment from others. Some people may experience more cognitive negativity.
