People parse sentences as they hear them and parse words the moment they arrive. Garden path sentences: temporary ambiguity inside a sentence. Early part is open to interpretations but later part clears it up. Commit yourself early to one interpretation and try to fit subsequent words as they arrive. Can lead to confusion later need to abandon initial interpretations. People tend to assume they"ll be hearing/reading active voice sentences rather than passive voice sentences. Interpret initial noun phrase as doer of action and not recipient. Can slow you down when it actually is a passive sentence. Morphemes can indicate syntax/parts of sentences that allow for easier comprehension even if you don"t know the words themselves. People try to parse sentences in a way that makes sense to them. Eye movement tracking during reading tells us when participants may need to reread a sentence to reinterpret it. Physical and social setting in which you encounter sentences.
