PSYCH 120A Chapter Notes - Chapter 3.2: Occipital Lobe, Parvocellular Cell, Parallel Computing
Document Summary
Area v1: site of the occipital lobe where axons from the lgn first reach the cortex. Full ensemble of cells in the area provides a detector for every possible stimulus, making certain that no matter what the input is or where it is located, some cell will respond to it. Each area of the visual system has its own function. Area mt neurons are sensitive to direction and speed of movement. Area v4 neurons are sensitive to certain colors and shapes. Parallel processing: specialized areas are active at the same time; many different steps going on simultaneously. Serial processing: steps carried out one at a time. Parallel processing allows faster processing by allowing all analyses to go forward immediately. Mutual influence among multiple system occurs during parallel processing which is important for a complete understanding of an object. Systems work concurrently to negotiate a solution that satisfies input from both systems.
