LIFESCI 7A Chapter 12: LS 7A week 8 Thursday
Document Summary
Ls 7a week 8 thursday rokaryotic cells divide by binary fission. When eukaryotic cells divide, they first divide the nucleus by mitosis, and then divide the cytoplasm into two daughter cells by cytokinesis. The majority of prokaryotic cells, namely bacteria and archaeons, divide by binary fission. Dna replication is initiated at a specific location on the circular dna molecule, called the origin of replication, and proceeds in opposite directions around the circle. The result is two dna molecules, each of which is attached to the plasma membrane at a different site. A mutation that disrupts the function of the ftsz protein will block cell division. And whereas the dna of prokaryotes is attached to the inside of the plasma membrane, allowing replicated dna to be separated into daughter cells by cell growth, the dna of eukaryotes is located in the nucleus. During m phase, the parent cell divides into two daughter cells.
