Document Summary

Macromolecules are allowing the functions of the cells to continue. The basic unit of life: life requires a structural compartment separate from the external environment in which macromolecules can perform unique functions in a relatively constant internal environment, these (cid:862)livi(cid:374)g co(cid:373)part(cid:373)e(cid:374)ts(cid:863) are cells. The cell theory: all organisms are composed of cells, cells are the fundamental units of life, all cells come from preexisting cells. Multicellular organisms: division of labor, cells must stick together, cells must communicate with each other. Minimum distance two points can be separated and still be distinguished as two points: unaided eye. Better to have multiple small cells occupying an area than a single large cell. Size and shape can both affect sa/b ratio of cells. Cells lining your intestine have many folds int heir cell membrane called microvilli. These microvilli increase the surface area of the cell. The increased sa/v ratio of these intestinal cells helps them absorb nutrient from food more efficiently.
