Document Summary

I attended the beloved reading from about 3:20 - 4:00 pm. One interesting element of hearing beloved out loud was that i was reminded of the chronology (or lack thereof) of the book. Hearing this section out loud reminded me just how disjointed the novel actually is in terms of chronology, yet the reader is still presented with all the information they need which i admire about toni. I think a similar effect occurs in lullaby where the memories are so well interwoven into the present day storyline. In addition, hearing the novel out loud made me recall the final page, where the narrator insists that this is not a story to pass on (324). I realized that there was an irony and perhaps a paradox in the writing down and passing on of sethe"s story via literature. It is something i don"t think the character herself would ever do, nor would most of the characters in beloved.
