Cyanide ion - an example of an ionic ligand. Cn- ions provide the electron pairs that form bonds to the lewis acid fe+2. Co molecules are ligands, acting as lewis bases. Each ligand has at least one lone pair of electrons bonding to the central atom or ion by forming a coordinate covalent bond.
