ASTR 3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1-2: Ellipse
Document Summary
Kepler"s 3 laws were devloped empirically, resulted from analysis of obserational data. Issac newton formed three basic laws of motion which today form basis of newtonian mechanics. He also formed law of universal gravitation and calculus. Enough to explain all complex dynamic behavior in universe. Newton"s first law: an object at rest remains at rest, and a moving object continues to move forever in a straight line with constant speed, unless some external force changes their state of motion. External force may be brick wall, hand, etc. Inertia: tendency of object to keep moving at same speed and in same direction unless acted upon by force. Mass is a measuer of an objecct"s inertia, it is the total amount of matter the object contains. Greater the mass, more inertia it has and greater force needed to change its motion. Acceleration: rate of change of velocity of an object.
