ASTR 3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 0-3: Stellar Atmosphere, Lunar Eclipse, Quarter Moon
Document Summary
Textbook notes: chapter 0. 3: the motion of the moon. By observing patterns in sky and associating them with events on. Earth, astronomers established connections between celestial events and everyday life. Calendars, religion often tied to its phases and cycles. Moon to us is 2nd brightest object in the sky, appears to move relative to background stars. Moon"s appearance undergoes cycle of phases taking about more than 29 days. Start with new moon, all but invisible, then stars to wax (grow) a little each night as a growing crescent. Quarter moon: one week after new moon when half of lunar disk cnan be seen. During next week, moon continues to wax, passing through gibbous phase. Two weeks after new moo, full moon is visible. During next 2 weeks, moon wanes (shrinks) passing through the gibbous, quarter, and crescent phases, eventually becoming new again. Location of moon in sky depends on phase.
