Howler monkey diet - leaves, fruits that do not need processing before eating. Capuchin diet - items that have to be bludgeoned/torn apart/killed. Need to solve spatial problems to find their food, defeat mechanical defenses of plants, outwit animal prey. Mealtime is full of high drama as social time. Rare for monkey to steal food outright, but common for meat to be gently licked/bit off by others. Females are more tolerant of begging from own offspring that other less closely related individuals. Beggars also hop on the food owner"s back to form a coalitionary posture against carcass. Behavioral ecologists believe animals assess (not consciously) the potential reprod costs and benefits of each of their actions when deciding what to do. Cooperation would have yielded higher return but every monkey hunts individually. Indivs perform similar actions to accomplish a goal, no coordination. Requires high level of cognitive sophistication to understand other indiv"s perspective.
